- It's a return to his roots with Rodney Crowell's latest release, in a career of nearly 40 years R.C. has flirted with commercial country and country rock and made some very good albums but has always excelled as a straight ahead country singer songwriter. On Tarpaper Sky he gives us some outstanding country tracks such as 'The flyboy and the kid' and Oh what a beautiful World', a gospel influenced 'Jesus talk to Mama' a 50's styled rocker ' Frankie please ' gorgeous ballads, a country waltz and a strident mid paced 'Long journey home'. Honestly there is not a bad track here, the backing musicians could not be more tasteful never crowding the singer and the production is perfect. This stands with his finest work and if you liked that don't miss this.
